Saris Mag+ wheel-on magnetic trainer review

A manual magnetic wheel-on trainer package distinguished from the base Mag by its included cable-operated handlebar shifter. The shifter changes resistance while riding, but the brake is not app-controlled and the base box has no trainer cassette or sensor.

A useful fit for

A candidate when you want an unpowered wheel-on magnetic trainer but would rather adjust its brake from the handlebar than reach down to the trainer body.

The main tradeoff

Mag+ is still not an app-controlled smart trainer. The page and manual reviewed here do not state a discrete setting count, and the box does not include a speed sensor, trainer cassette or Cog/Click. Tire and axle fit remain checks rather than a universal guarantee.

Your needs, this model

Does it fit your priorities?

What is different about Mag+ compared with the standard Saris Mag?

The Mag+ SKU 9902T includes a cable-operated handlebar shifter for manual resistance changes while riding. The base Mag 1020T instead has a trainer-side manual adjustment, and its product page says the handlebar shifter is sold separately. These are distinct package workflows even though both use a wheel-on magnetic unit.

Does Mag+ automatically change resistance through an app?

No. The handlebar lever is a manual cable control. Saris says a separate speed or cadence sensor can connect the trainer to apps for data, but no automatic app-controlled brake is described for the Mag+.

Does the Mag+ package include an app sensor or cassette?

The listed SKU 9902T box includes the trainer parts and Mag+ remote shifter, but not a speed or cadence sensor, trainer cassette or Zwift Cog and Click. The bicycle retains its own rear wheel and cassette; verify the seller's actual box and price any optional sensor separately.

Will my tire and rear axle work with Mag+?

Saris lists 650b and 700c wheels, 27.5-inch tires up to 2 inches wide, and 29-inch tires up to 1.5 inches wide only when the tire has no tread. It excludes 650c, 26-inch and treaded or wider-than-1.5-inch 29-inch setups. A steel quick-release skewer is included; 142 x 12 mm and 148 x 12 mm adapters are sold separately.

The Saris Mag+ is a rear-wheel-on magnetic trainer sold as SKU 9902T. Its defining difference from the standard Mag 1020T is not smart technology: it is the included cable-operated handlebar shifter. The rider can change the trainer's manual magnetic resistance at the bar instead of reaching down to the resistance unit. Saris still describes the Mag+ as a basic trainer, with separate sensors used for app data rather than automatic braking.

The included remote changes the routine, not the category

Saris lists the remote shifter in the Mag+ box and explains how its cable connects the handlebar lever to the resistance unit. The shared classic-trainer manual instructs the rider to push or lift the lever to change resistance. That can be convenient during a seated workout, but it remains a mechanical manual control. The product materials reviewed here do not state a reliable number of discrete settings for the Mag+ lever, so this assessment does not borrow the standard Mag's five-level figure just because the models share a family name.

The Mag+ can work with supported training apps when paired with a separate speed or cadence sensor. That statement concerns data transmission; Saris does not document an app changing the Mag+'s magnetic resistance. There is no listed integrated power meter or accuracy figure, nor a manufacturer's simulated-grade percentage for this configuration. The Saris page names Zwift and Rouvy but does not state that either service subscription is included; check current app and account terms rather than treating data access as automatic resistance control.

Check the wheel, tire and rear axle before ordering

The 9902T is wheel-on, so the rear wheel stays mounted and its tire contacts the trainer roller. Saris lists a steel quick-release trainer skewer and support positions for 120, 130 and 135 mm rear spacing. Its instructions direct riders using 142 x 12 mm or 148 x 12 mm thru-axles to a separate adapter. Check the bicycle's exact axle and frame width; the category label “wheel-on” alone does not establish fit.

Saris identifies 650b and 700c wheels, 27.5-inch tires up to 2 inches wide, and 29-inch tires up to 1.5 inches wide without tread as supported examples. It says 650c, 26-inch wheels, and treaded or wider-than-1.5-inch 29-inch tires are incompatible. A smooth trainer tire is recommended rather than included. Because the contact roller acts directly on the rear tire, tread, pressure and correct tension are practical setup variables, not cosmetic details.

What the published numbers do and do not establish

Saris lists 69 decibels at 20 mph for the Mag+. This is a manufacturer condition, not an independent measurement or a promise about sound in a particular apartment, basement or shared room. Tire tread, floor construction, cadence and roller setup all affect the result a household hears. Saris also lists a 300 lb maximum for rider plus bicycle together; it is not a 300 lb rider rating.

The available sources do not give a simulated climbing grade or a maximum wattage. The adjustable shifter changes resistance, but that does not make the product a grade-simulation trainer or support a numeric hill-limit claim. A finder asking for a minimum grade treats the field as unknown, even at zero. That is a limit in the documented information, not a statement that the trainer cannot generate resistance.

Why pick Mag+ instead of the standard Mag?

Both the Mag and Mag+ keep the rear wheel on, use magnetic resistance and lack app-controlled braking. For the standard Mag, Saris says the bar-mounted control is sold separately; Mag+ includes the remote in the 9902T package. The Mag page specifies five trainer-side settings, while the Mag+ page and shared manual do not provide a discrete setting count. The choice is therefore best framed around the control location and box contents the maker actually documents, rather than a guessed number of steps.

See the separate Mag 1020T assessment if reaching down for a manual adjustment is acceptable. If automatic app resistance is essential, a basic magnetic trainer does not meet that requirement; compare the reviewed Elite Tuo for a different smart wheel-on arrangement or the direct-drive choices in the full trainer library. The Elite Qubo Fluid provides a useful non-smart contrast: its wheel-on fluid unit is progressive rather than magnetic and manual.

Assessment basis

This is an original, source-based product assessment, not a hands-on trial. The exact Saris SKU 9902T product page, current manufacturer comparison, support listing and linked Classic Trainers manual support the trainer type, shifter package, tire/axle guidance and stated noise condition. They do not guarantee that a third-party offer contains every listed item or that a particular frame fits. Confirm SKU 9902T, the shifter and skewer in the box, any separate thru-axle adapter, seller condition and current software/device requirements before committing.
