JetBlack VOLT V2 Smart Trainer review

A historically U.S.-directed 2022 direct-drive smart-trainer listing with an 11-speed cassette. The exact U.S. MPN, current supply and any individual seller unit are unverified.

Sources checked 2026-11-01 · Our editorial approach

Earlier U.S.-directed 2022 VOLT V2 listing, not a current availability or stock claim. Its U.S. page screenshot does not disclose an MPN or serial-specific box; verify the exact unit, cassette, axle adapters, firmware and seller terms.

A useful fit for

A research comparison for someone who explicitly includes earlier direct-drive smart trainers and wants a documented cassette-included package and 16% manufacturer grade claim, subject to checking the actual VOLT V2 unit, bike axle, drivetrain, adapter and present seller terms.

The main tradeoff

The historic U.S.-directed screenshot omits an MPN, says 'Coming Soon' and shows a wait-list action; current U.S. supply and any later unit's cassette, adapter, firmware, warranty or condition are unknown. Manufacturer accuracy, maximum-power and axle-summary figures conflict, so they are not treated as settled ratings or fit claims.

Your needs, this model

Does it fit your priorities?

Does the historical U.S.-directed VOLT V2 package list a cassette or a Zwift Cog and Click?

The reproduced 2022 manufacturer-page screenshot and JetBlack's official VOLT V2 launch-video description both say an 11-speed cassette was preinstalled. Neither source establishes the exact MPN or every part in a later seller's box. JetBlack's separate support material says V2 can be upgraded for Cog/Click compatibility; that does not mean Cog or Click shipped in the pictured cassette package.

What should be checked before mounting a bike on a VOLT V2 listing?

Match the exact bike's dropout, rear axle, frame/brake clearance and cassette to the physical trainer and included adapters. JetBlack's setup section names 130/135 mm quick release and 12 × 142/148 mm thru-axle arrangements, but its own compatibility summary says 140/148 mm; that discrepancy means a generic 'fits most bikes' line is not enough. The old U.S. screenshot does not itemize the complete carton.

What grade threshold is supported for the earlier VOLT V2 plan?

JetBlack lists a 16% simulated-grade maximum for the VOLT and warns that excessive heat may compromise that capability. It is a manufacturer ceiling, not an independent test, a rider-specific route promise or a guarantee about an individual older unit. The same manufacturer materials disagree on accuracy and power figures; those are not substituted for the grade claim.

A V2 identification, not a claim of current stock

The historic U.S.-directed listing for this trainer was captured in a 2022 court filing, where the reproduced JetBlack page calls it “The VOLT Smart Trainer.” The screenshot uses the phrase “now smarter and more refined” and says an 11-speed cassette came preinstalled. On September 4, 2022, JetBlack Cycling posted its own VOLT V2 product video using that distinctive launch phrase and the same cassette description. Together, the page date, manufacturer video title and repeated copy support identifying the U.S.-directed listing as the VOLT V2 generation. That is a source-based identification inference; the screenshot does not give a U.S. MPN, serial number or completed sale.

The captured page also showed “Coming Soon” and a wait-list button. It proves what the dated page advertised, not that a unit shipped to a buyer or that the product is in stock now. This review treats the trainer as an earlier U.S.-directed configuration and leaves seller availability, condition and full-carton contents open.

The documented package is cassette-included

The specific useful distinction is the drive package: the reproduced U.S.-directed page and JetBlack’s official VOLT V2 video both describe a preinstalled 11-speed cassette. That makes this a direct-drive, rear-wheel-off setup with a conventional cassette rather than a wheel-on trainer or a Cog-only virtual-shifting package. A cassette's speed count alone does not guarantee that a buyer’s chain, derailleur, cassette spacing and freehub are compatible. Inspect the actual cassette and the bike’s drivetrain before assuming the trainer can be moved between bikes without adjustment.

JetBlack’s current support instructions describe a later Cog-and-Click firmware pathway for VOLT 2.0, but that is separate from the cassette-included page. It does not mean a Cog or Click controller was in the historic box. If virtual shifting is the goal, verify the unit is actually V2, confirm the firmware procedure and app support, and establish the cost and compatibility of the separate hardware before comparing it with a model sold with Cog and Click already in the package.

Smart resistance brings a powered software setup

JetBlack describes the VOLT as an electromagnetic smart trainer using Bluetooth FTMS and ANT+ FE-C, with resistance controlled by compatible training software. It is not simply a manual brake with a sensor added. The manufacturer’s instructions also tell riders to use its own app for spin-down calibration and firmware updates; an older unit’s current firmware state and connection behavior are not established by its historic listing. As with any smart trainer, check which app and device will actually control resistance, rather than treating a wireless protocol label as proof that every workout feature works in every app.

This trainer uses an external power adapter. The historic U.S. page does not itemize the adapter or every included tool and axle part, so the old “ready to ride” wording should not replace a seller’s written confirmation about the specific box. A powered, electronically controlled setup may suit structured software workouts, but it adds a wall-power and software dependency that a manual trainer does not have.

Keep the grade claim; leave disputed ratings unresolved

JetBlack publishes a 16% simulated-grade maximum for the VOLT. Its own instructions warn that excess heat from heavy use can compromise that capability, so the number is a maker-stated ceiling, not an independent climbing test, a rider-specific route promise or a guarantee for an older individual unit. It is a useful screening figure only when the buyer is willing to verify the exact trainer and accepts the manufacturer’s conditions.

Other figures on the same manufacturer material do not reconcile. One specification block gives ±2% power accuracy, while the FAQ gives 2.5%; the technical table lists 1,800 watts, while another section describes 2,000 watts at 60 kph. This assessment does not select one value or present either as a tested result. The manufacturer also lists 16.5 kg and a 120 kg maximum rider weight; those are specifications, not measurements of a unit available today.

Confirm the axle and clearance against the actual bike

Direct drive means removing the bicycle’s rear wheel and mounting the frame on the trainer’s axle. JetBlack’s setup instructions identify 130/135 mm quick-release fitting and describe a 12 × 142/148 mm thru-axle installation, but the same support page’s shorter compatibility summary says 140/148 mm. Because the page itself differs, do not use a broad compatibility statement as a substitute for checking the real adapter and the bike. Its generic instructions describe several adapters; they do not establish which exact parts were shipped in the historical U.S. box.

Check dropout spacing, brake and frame clearance, cassette/freehub, front-wheel support, floor space and a nearby outlet. If the trainer is being considered secondhand or from a later seller, ask for the exact model marking and photographs of the cassette, adapters, power supply and drive-side cap. The manufacturer distinguishes V1’s flat cap from V2’s sloped cap; that distinction matters because only V2 is eligible for the Cog-and-Click firmware upgrade. No exact bike fit follows from the model name alone.

An earlier assessment, not a live availability promise

A December 2022 trade report quotes Wahoo’s settlement statement that JetBlack would cease VOLT sales in the United States and Europe. That is relevant context for why this library treats the captured U.S.-directed page as an earlier model; it is not a current all-seller inventory check or proof that no used unit can be found. The listing’s wait-list state, missing MPN, unresolved carton and unanswered condition questions all argue for checking the exact offer rather than relying on an old marketing page.

This is a research-based assessment, not a hands-on review or an independent power test. Consider the VOLT V2 only if earlier models are acceptable, the cassette-included direct-drive arrangement fits the intended drivetrain, the 16% manufacturer grade ceiling is sufficient, and a seller can verify the exact unit, parts, firmware, warranty and return terms. If the seller cannot identify the sloped-cap V2 generation and show the cassette and matching axle adapters, the documented package is not established.
